All dreams have a story

Updated: Nov 21, 2019

Hi there. My name is Tamara Silva. I was born and raised in Mexico. I am 24 years old and the founder of Mexfastyle.

6 years ago, I was finishing high school. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with my life, so I took an opportunity to go to Germany to work and study the language. I had study German as a third language for the past 3 years, but I wanted to master it. This was the perfect opportunity to embark on an year-long adventure and into the real world.

It was during this time, that for the first time, I grasped the depth and uniqueness of Mexican culture. I knew, right there and then, that I had to find a way to give it the international recognition it deserved.

I started brainstorming. I had to think of a strategy to easily integrate Mexican culture. I was inclined towards the traditional art of embroidery from indigenous regions (one of my favourite centuries-old traditions). It was perfect: wearable and versatile.

I had a long way ahead of me. I was going to have to learn the right skills if I wanted to fulfil my mission at an international scale. I needed to learn how to build a business plan, how to conduct proper market research, how to build a financial plan, how to protect my designs, ... the list went on and on.

When I came back from Germany, I decided to study International Relations and Business. Since I decided to target the fashion market, my personal passion for the subject was not going to be enough. I applied and got an internship at SIEMENS in New York City. I was working in their finance department. In my spare time, I decided to take courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I studied fashion design, accessories design, and fashion as a business. I was fascinated.

When I cam back, I was ready. I knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it.

A lot of people, however, told me I was too young and that I didn't have enough experience.

"Work at a company first, Tamara." "Handbags and cross-bodies are far too common." "Your idea is not innovative enough."

Two years later, Mexfastyle products are available in 9 different stores across Mexico, in New York City at Blackbarn in the Chelsea Market, and we recently launched a version of our website tailored to the Canadian market.

During a business meeting a few weeks ago, our brand ambassador in Canada asked me, "If you could go back in time to when everything started, what would you tell yourself?" I had to stop and think for a second. Then, I said:

"Keep going. Just keep going. It won't be easy and you will have to sacrifice and work more than ever before. But be patient. Work hard and wait. The achievements will be far more rewarding than you can imagine. You will be surprised by what you can accomplish. For every person who doesn't believe in you, there will be 3 more cheering for you. What you are doing is not just starting a business. It's a life-changing experience."
